Exhibition 2022 : Dragons

Legends about dragons and brave heroes have fascinated people around the world for thousands of years.  These magical creatures have been brought to life over the centuries in artwork, stories, song and dance. In more recent times, breathtaking special effects in the film and gaming industries have created dramatic adventures between dragons and their human counterparts, as never before. In ancient and contemporary times alike, dragons symbolize humankind's greatest hopes, fears, and most passionate dreams.

Today, the Dragon exhibition at Chateau Belcastel brings a monumental, animated experience up close and personal for the first time in France. In 2021, the cultural office for the president of Ukraine organized these dragons to be exhibited in Kiev, and after the show ended, the dragons were held hostage for ransom and trapped in two big trucks 20 kilometers from where rockets were being fired! Finally, after two stressful days, the United Nations delivered special papers demanding the release of these dragons…..Why? In 2017, UNESCO gave a special prize to the dragon makers for bringing culture into remote areas where children have no museums. So, for the first time in France, these lucky dragons are here to thrill, entertain and inspire you.

An extraordinary collection of mythological dragons will be coming to Europe for only the second time. The Château of Belcastel is proud to present this very special exhibition that will be installed during school holidays. The creatures have been exhibited in Tel Aviv, Kiev, Warsaw, and after departing the Aveyron region in France, they will go to museums in Moscow, Helsinki and on to London in 2023.

These monumental, animated beasts will bring together, as never before, a fantastic realm in the midst of a medieval historic monument. The exterior property and inner courtyards will come alive with “living” dragons. Visitors can get up close to the enormous moving and growling mythological beasts, and will learn about their legends and lore throughout the tour.

Dragon tamers for a day, children will be able to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience, to ride a dragon! One of these creatures is available to ride at the Chateau - he is a life-size reproduction of the “Night Fury” dragon, "Toothless" from the popular Dreamworks animated film, "How to Train Your Dragon.’’
